How Often Should You Wax Your Car?
Cars should be waxed every 2 to 6 months depending on where you store your car. Cars parked in the sun and elements will need to be waxed every 2 to 4 months while cars parked in a garage or under a cover can go up to 6 months between waxes. A good way to tell if your car needs to be waxed is to look how the water runs off it when it gets wet. If the water beads on the painted surfaces, your car is good; otherwise, it is time for a wax.
The paint of your car gets hit with all sorts of dirt and grime which can scratch and dull the surface. Feel your paint; if it feels more like sandpaper, it is need of some special care. Before you wax your car it needs to be washed. Never use dish soap or detergent on your vehicle. It is best to purchase a non- abrasive cleaner made for this purpose. After you wash your car, run your hand over the paint again to make sure it is not still rough. If it still feels like grime is embedded in the paint, it should be removed using a clay bar. This clay can be purchased at an auto supply store. Follow the directions on the package being careful not to scratch the paint. Now your car is ready to be waxed. Again, follow the direction on the package, but avoid black and/or plastic trim. The wax will make it look filmy. Buy a special polish for black and/or plastic.
